John W. Barringer is Vice Chairman, former President and CEO, and co-founder of Cumberland Trust and Investment Company. Prior to starting Cumberland Trust, John worked with First Tennessee in Memphis where he developed First Tennessee's Middle Tennessee Trust Division. Afterwards, he moved to Nashville to serve as the primary Business Development Officer for the bank and manage the Personal Trust, Employee Benefits, and Investment Management Departments. The idea for Cumberland Trust stemmed from John's desire to provide localized trust administration to families, while allowing them to keep their own established financial advisors.
John's career began in his family’s cotton merchandising company. He is a co-founder and former Chairman of the Agriculture Council of America, co-founder of the Agricenter International facility in Memphis and both Chairman and President, and served as a member of the President's Export Council under the Carter Administration.
John is also a member of the Tennessee Bar Association, the Nashville Bar Association, the Estate Planning Council, the Planned Giving Council, and has served on the boards of various non-profit organizations.
He received his J.D. from the University of Memphis.
